I carried my cousin's school fees for 3 years and my family still thinks I'm jobless
about 2 months ago
My cousin Tunde is 21 now. He can design UI better than half the people I pay at work. But for three years, every semester, I have been the one quietly paying his fees at that tech school in Yaba. Nobody in my family knows.
Why? Because when I told them at the beginning that I would help him, my uncle said, 'Ah, Deji, you wey no even get serious work, na you wan carry this kind load?' So I shut up and just carried it. Every month I transfer. Sometimes it's tight, some months consulting money no land at all. But Tunde must finish.
Last week my mother called me to say Tunde got a remote job. She was crying. She said, 'God bless whoever helped that boy.' I just said amen. The thing is, I am not even doing it for praise. But sometimes I wonder, if they knew, would they still call me the one who has no direction?
