I Was the Only Woman in the Room. Here Is What They Asked Me to Do for the Contract.

This was back in 2021. I was 29, working as a project officer in a construction firm in Enugu. The kind of company that bids for state government road contracts. I had been there two years and I was the only woman in every meeting that mattered. The MD, a man in his late fifties, called me into his office on a Tuesday. He said there was a contract worth 480 million naira on the table. Ministry of Works. But the commissioner wanted to "see commitment." I asked what that meant. He said the commissioner liked women who understood how business worked in the East. I sat there. My salary was 140,000 naira a month. My younger brother was in 200 level and my mother's BP drugs were not cheap. The MD said it was just dinner. Just one night. He said other girls in the industry do it and nobody dies. I told him I would think about it. I did not go. I went home, I cried, and the next morning I told him no. He did not shout. He just looked at me like I had wasted his time. The contract went to another firm three weeks later. And my name quietly stopped appearing in the project emails. I left that job six months after. It took me a year to find something else, and I had to start small again. But hear me: I have never regretted it. Not once. The money they were offering would have finished in one year. The shame would have stayed with me for life. If you are a young woman in that kind of office, know that the door they close is not the only door. God dey.
