Jollof with salad on the side is not a crime, una just like suffering
about 2 months ago
My own daughter came home from school last week and told me her friend's mum serves jollof with coleslaw and calls it a balanced meal. I laughed so hard I had to sit down. In this London, people will put raisins inside jollof and call it party rice, then look you in the eye and say it is authentic.
See ehn, I grew up in Ibadan where jollof is jollof. The rice stands on its own, the stew is dark and serious, and if you must add anything, it is fried plantain and maybe some chicken that has suffered well in the pot. Salad is for when you are watching your weight, not when you are celebrating. My mother would have chased anybody out of her kitchen for putting cucumber next to her pot of rice.
But my Ghanaian husband now, he will eat his jollof with salad and shito and look at me like I am the one who is confused. And my children, God help me, they agree with him. So tell me the truth, is salad beside jollof a normal thing where you come from, or is it just something wey people do when they don forget how food is supposed to taste?
