My uncle promised me London. Then the money vanished into thin air.

2022. I had already resigned from my fintech job. Told everybody at the office say I dey travel for my master's. My uncle, the one that lives in Lekki Phase 1, the one that drives that his G-Wagon, he called me one Sunday afternoon and said, "Jide, don't worry about the tuition. I will handle everything. Just get your admission."

I got the admission. University of Manchester. I was so happy I nearly cried. I even started buying winter clothes. My mother was telling everybody in church say her son is going to London.

Then two weeks before I was supposed to travel, he called me. His voice was different. He said, "Jide, I'm so sorry. Something came up. A family emergency. The money is gone." Just like that. Gone.

I sat down on my bed for like one hour. I didn't cry. I just sat there. My mother was calling me, asking when I'm traveling. I didn't know what to tell her.

That was the worst period of my life. No job. No master's. No money. Just shame.

But you know what? I picked myself up. Started freelancing. Small small. Then one remote job came. Then another. Today, I earn in dollars. I send money to my mother every month. She still thinks I earn in Naira. I let her believe it.

The lesson? Nobody owes you anything in this life. Not even family. Build your own thing. Quietly. And when God blesses you, don't announce it.
