Opposition Coalition Meets Sept 23 To Pick One Candidate Against Tinubu
about 2 months ago
Salihu Lukman came out on Thursday and said the opposition is finally moving to operationalise a national coalition to face President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the January 16, 2027 presidential election. The group is operating under the name G100, and he said the whole point is to guarantee equal opportunities and mutual respect among the participating parties.
The coalition already carries the African Democratic Congress, the Social Democratic Party, and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party. Lukman wrote that the Central Leadership Committee resolved to expand and accommodate other forward-thinking opposition parties that have expressed interest. He said, "The Committee will reconvene on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and has committed to meeting regularly in order to achieve the objective of uniting opposition parties in the country and presenting a united front in the 2027 elections."
Here is my honest take. Nigerians have watched this movie before. In 2014 the same energy produced APC and it worked. In 2019 and 2023 the same energy produced nothing but press statements and hotel meetings in Abuja. The question is not whether they can talk, it is whether they can drop their personal ambitions and pick one name by September 23. That is the only thing that matters. Am I the only one that thinks a coalition without one candidate is just a WhatsApp group?
