For Two Years I Was Dying Inside and Still Greeting Everybody Good Morning

This was back in 2021. I was 29, working as an accountant in Warri, and on paper my life was correct. Salary was entering, rent was paid, my people in Sapele were proud of me. But every morning I would sit in my car in front of the office gate and calculate whether today was the day I would finally drive into the express instead of turning into the compound. I don't know when it started. Maybe when the job I loved turned into a job I was just surviving. My boss would shout at me in front of junior staff, and I would nod and say sorry sir. I stopped eating well. I stopped picking calls. My girlfriend then kept asking what was wrong and I kept telling her it was work stress. She left after one year. I cannot blame her. In my office I was the funny one. I was the person who would make everybody laugh at lunch. Nobody knew that some nights I would lie on my bedroom floor in Warri, fully dressed, until morning. Church on Sunday, amen, hallelujah, then Monday the same darkness. In Nigeria if you say you are depressed, they will ask you what you are depressed about. As if sadness needs a receipt. The thing that saved me was small and stupid. My younger sister, 24 then, came to stay with me for two weeks. One night she just entered my room, sat on the floor, and said she noticed I had not laughed properly in days. Not the office laugh. The real one. I broke down. Full crying, the kind that comes from your stomach. She did not preach. She just held my head and said we would find somebody to talk to. I saw a therapist in Warri. Expensive, 40k per session, but I went. I am better now. Not finished, but better. My advice: the person who will save you is not always a pastor or a prayer warrior. Sometimes it is somebody who just sits on your floor and notices. Do not wait until you are parked in front of that express. Talk to somebody. Anybody.
