We Said It Was Nothing Serious for Two Years. Then She Called Me Another Man's Name.

I was 28 that year, working small IT support job in Owerri, and Ifeoma was the teller at the bank branch near my office. We started as just friends. She had a boyfriend in Lagos, I had nothing serious, and we used to talk every night like it was nothing. The first time we crossed the line was a Friday after her office closed late. Rain was falling, no transport, she came to my place. One thing led to another. After that we agreed it was nothing, just stress relief, no strings. We kept that agreement for two years. But small small, things changed. I started buying her things without reason. She started calling me when her boyfriend traveled. We would spend weekends together and call it "just chilling." Neither of us wanted to say what it was because saying it meant we had to do something about it. The moment I knew it was more was when she fell sick with malaria and I stayed three nights at her place, spooning her, buying drugs, missing work. Her neighbor asked if I was her husband and I did not correct her. Then one night, in the middle of everything, she called me "Kelechi." That is her boyfriend's name. I stopped. She woke up and started crying. We did not talk for one week. We are still in it. Nothing has changed. We still say it is nothing serious. But I know now that when you are sleeping with someone and you know their family, their sickness, their secrets, and their boyfriend's name, it is no longer a situationship. It is just a lie you both agreed to tell. My advice: if you have to keep saying "it is nothing serious," then it is already something. Run or define it. Do not wait until she calls you another man's name in the dark.
