My uncle forged my late father's land papers, and I found out in the worst way

Two years ago I went back to Akure to sell my father's land. I needed the money for my startup. I had already told myself this was the move that would finally prove to my family that this tech thing was not just noise.

The land was in Oba-Ile, close to the express. My father bought it in 2004, before he died. I had the original documents in a folder my mother kept inside her wardrobe for years.

I took the papers to a lawyer in Akure, one Baba Femi that my uncle recommended. He looked at them for like ten minutes, then he looked at me. He said, "Deji, these papers are not the ones on file. Somebody has been paying land use charge on this plot since 2019."

I laughed. I thought it was a mix-up. It was not a mix-up.

The name on the file was my uncle's. My father's younger brother. The same man who prayed at my father's funeral. The same man who told me in 2018, "Deji, your father would be proud of you."

He had forged a deed of assignment. He had a surveyor redo the plan. For six years, he was collecting rent from a man who built a small block of shops on that land.

I sat in my car for one hour before I drove to his house. I did not cry. I just sat there, watching okada men pass, asking myself what my father would say.

I did not expose him. My mother is still alive. His wife is my mother's best friend. If I had gone to the police, the whole family would scatter. So I did the Nigerian thing. We settled inside the family. He gave me a small portion of what the land was worth. Small. Very small.

I used it to pay rent in Yaba that year. The startup did not happen. It failed like the others.

What I learned? Land documents in Nigeria mean nothing if somebody in your family is willing to forge. And the people who will wound you deepest are the ones who know where the wound is. Check your papers. Even the ones your mother is keeping. Especially those ones.
