I Inflated One Invoice at Work and Pocketed 400k. My Boss's Family Paid for It.

This was 2021, I was 34, working as procurement officer for a small construction firm off Zik Avenue in Enugu. Salary was 180k a month and my rent alone was 150k. Every month was a war. It started with one supplier. He needed his invoice approved fast, so he added 50k for me inside. I signed. Nobody checked. The next month I did 80k. By December I had done it four times. Omo, the thing sweet like honey when it first enters your hand. The big one was the Julius Berger subcontract. I inflated the haulage line by 400k and split it with the supplier. I told myself it was compensation. My wife was pregnant with our second, my landlord was threatening eviction. I was not stealing, I was surviving. That is what I told myself. Six months later the company audited. They traced the haulage. The supplier sang immediately. I was called into the MD's office with the accounts manager sitting there like a judge. I confessed everything. I was not arrested. The MD was a church elder. He said I should repay 900k in six months or he would hand me to EFCC. I repaid it. I sold my car, borrowed from my brother in Onitsha. I left that job with nothing. The thing that still holds me is this. My MD's younger brother was the one who introduced me to that supplier. He was doing the same thing, just smaller. When the audit came, they protected him and used me as the scapegoat. He is still there today. Lesson? If you must steal, know who else is stealing with you. But better lesson: the small small money you take at work will one day ask you for your car, your peace, and your name. I thank God I did not go to prison. Some people are not that lucky.
