The names of 37 suspected illegal miners who died in NSCDC custody in Niger State have finally been released. They were arrested during anti-illegal mining operations in the state on September 15 and 16, and all of them were dead by September 17.
The NSCDC claims they died from a suspected disease outbreak and says the bodies were deposited at the General Hospital in Minna for examination. Governor Mohammed Bago imposed a 24-hour curfew on Friday after youths protested, and he says survivors have been reunited with their families after the Police and DSS took their statements.
37 people arrested on Monday and Tuesday, dead by Wednesday, and the explanation is disease. If that is true, why were they not taken to hospital immediately? Who was on duty in that facility, and who gave the order that kept them there?
