The day my father's land sold me peace I never wanted

My son came home with that jamb result in 2011. He passed. He was dancing. I was sitting on the veranda with my tea, and my hand was shaking small small. Because I knew what was coming next.

Fees. Hostel. Books. Everything. And I had just retired two years before, pension dey come once in three months if at all.

I didn't tell my wife. I didn't tell anybody. I just carried that land document my late father left me in the village and I sold it to one Alhaji from Ilorin. ₦380,000. That was big money then. I paid my son's first year with it and I kept the rest for the next.

For years I couldn't look at my younger brother Adewale in the eye. Every family meeting, I would find excuse to leave early. The land was supposed to be for all of us.

Then one day in 2019, we had a meeting about the family compound. My brother asked about the land. I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I just said it. Everything. The whole thing.

He was quiet for a long time. Then he said, "Kunle, you think you are the only one who has done something like this?"

Ah. I almost cried there.

The land is gone. My son is a doctor now. And I learned that shame you carry alone is heavier than the truth you share.
