I Wore a Waist Trainer for Two Years. My Ribs Are Still Bent Till Today.

I was 27, working as a front desk officer in one of those small hotels around Ibara in Abeokuta, and every morning I stood in front of that mirror and hated what I saw. My mates were getting married, and me? I was slim in the wrong places and heavy in the wrong places. So when a colleague showed me one of those waist trainer things, I ordered it sharp sharp. 25,000 naira. The plan was simple: wear it under my uniform from 6am to 10pm, six days a week. Omo. The first week, I could not breathe properly. But I told myself it was working. I tightened it every month. After one year, my waist was smaller. But my ribs started paining me at night. I would wake up and touch my side and feel something shifting. My mother noticed I was always holding my waist and asked if I was pregnant. I laughed it off. Then one Sunday, I fainted at church during offering. They rushed me to Federal Medical Centre. The doctor asked me one question: "How long have you been binding your chest and waist?" I lied at first. He looked at my X-ray and said nothing. My ribs had started bending inward. He said if I continued, I would damage my lungs. I stopped that day. But the damage was done. Till today, my left side is not straight. I cannot wear fitted clothes without people asking why my body is shaped like that. I am 31 now. I have learned to love this body. But every time I see young girls on Instagram tying waist trainers, I want to scream. Your body is not a project. It is a house you will live in for the rest of your life. Do not renovate it for people who will not pay your hospital bill.
