Anambra Just Dragged Peter Obi With His Own 2006 Memo

The Anambra State government has challenged Peter Obi to honour his own campaign pledge and quit the 2027 presidential race if it can be proven he left salary liabilities behind when he left office in March 2014. They dropped this on their verified X account yesterday, and the whole thing is messy.

Here is the part that made me sit up. They dug out a memo dated April 25, 2006, written by Chuks Ileogbunam, who was Obi's Chief of Staff at the time. It was addressed to Obi himself, less than two months into his first tenure, about Anambra State Water Corporation workers who had not been paid since February. Ileogbunam wrote: "Fundamentally, your campaign manifesto pledges that Your Excellency will resign if there is any case where workers are not paid as at when due. Your Excellency, Water Corporation workers were last paid in February." That is not an opponent talking. That is the man's own Chief of Staff quoting his own manifesto back to him.

The state also claims eight external borrowings from Obi's tenure were still outstanding after he left, with a balance of about N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026, per Debt Management Office figures. Commissioner for Information Law Mefor said the current administration cleared about N22 billion in inherited gratuity arrears, and claimed Obi verified 16 months of primary school teacher salary arrears but paid only five. Obi has fired back that he cleared over N35 billion in historical gratuities and left no unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor debts, and he is daring them to prove it.

Now let me be honest with una. Every governor in this country leaves liabilities. That is not the issue. The issue is a man who built his entire brand on "I donζ•™ lie" and manifesto pledges now being confronted with his own handwriting from 2006. If the memo is genuine, and nobody has disputed that it is, then somebody needs to explain how Water Corporation workers were owed salaries in April 2006 while the manifesto said the governor would resign for exactly that. I am not saying Obi is a fraud. I am saying this is the kind of thing that should worry anybody who plans to vote on character alone. Be honest, if your own Chief of Staff wrote you that memo in 2006, would you still be quoting that same manifesto in 2026?
