My Best Friend Paid My School Fees for Two Years. Then I Found Out Why.

I was 22, in my third year at a university in Abuja, and my father had just lost his job at the ministry. One morning I went to the bursary to check my name on the list of students cleared to write exams. My name was not there. I stood in that corridor for almost twenty minutes, just staring, while people pushed past me. That evening I called my friend Ify. We had been close since 100 level, she was from Asaba, quiet girl, always had her head in a book. I did not even ask her for money. I just told her my name was off the list. She said nothing. Two days later the bursary called me. Paid. Full session. I ran to her hostel and she just smiled and said God provided. This repeated. Second semester. Then the whole of 400 level. Every time I asked how, she would change the subject or say her uncle in Lagos was helping. I was too relieved to push it. I graduated. NYSC. Job in Gwarinpa. Life moved. Then last year, her younger brother called me. Ify had died. Cancer. She had been sick for a long time and told nobody. He said she left a box for me. Inside were receipts. Every payment she made for my school fees. And a note that said she had been diagnosed in 300 level and did not want me to drop out because of her. Omo. I sat on that floor for hours. She carried that alone for years while I was busy thanking God for provision. I am not writing this to cry. I am writing it because we bury people we never really knew. If somebody is carrying you quietly, ask them questions. Ask them twice. Do not just collect and move on.
