The UK teacher ban story is not about Gmail, it's about gatekeeping
about 1 month ago
So the UK removed Nigerian and Ghanaian trained teachers from their qualification list, and the reason they gave is that applicants were using Gmail and Hotmail addresses on official forms. Bruh. That is the official reason. Not exam scores. Not teaching standards. Email domains.
Let me break it down. The numbers say the UK has a shortage of teachers. They need bodies in classrooms. But instead of fast-tracking qualified people, they found a clerical excuse to filter us out. And we all know it was never about the email. It was about keeping the door narrow enough that only a certain kind of applicant walks through.
Here is the part nobody wants to say out loud. A Nigerian teacher with a UNILAG or OAU degree has survived worse classrooms than most UK schools will ever see. Forty students, one textbook, no light, still delivering results. If we are being honest, the email was never the problem. The problem was the passport.
My cousin teaches in Leeds now. She applied long before this rule. When she saw the news she just laughed and said "they will always find a new reason." So the question is simple. If a UK school is desperate for teachers and a Nigerian teacher is qualified, why does a Gmail address matter more than the certificate?
