The Uber driver's maths finally broke my brain today
about 1 month ago
Traffic on Ozumba was doing its usual thing, so I settled in and the driver started gisting. Somehow we landed on how much his car earns him. He said he clears about ₦45k on a good day after fuel.
I did the quiet calculation in my head. That is roughly ₦1.1m a month if he works six days. Before you clap, subtract the car note, the maintenance, the data, the fines, the days NEPA kills his charging, the days he cannot work because of one police checkpoint or another. The numbers stop looking impressive very fast.
Then he dropped the line that ended me. He said he is saving for a second car so he can rent it out and finally rest. Man is running a whole logistics business inside Lagos chaos and still thinks he is just driving. I paid and got out feeling like I have been doing life wrong.
How many people around us are quietly running enterprises while calling themselves one small hustler?
