The day Tolu moved out and left me with her share of the rent
about 1 month ago
Two years ago, me and my best friend Tolu decided to rent a place in Lekki. We pooled our savings, paid one year rent, everything was sweet. We were living our best lives, or so I thought.
Then the money wahala started. Small arguments about who paid for what. She started complaining about the light bill, then the water. I was like, 'Tolu, we're in this together, abi?'
One weekend, I traveled to Abuja for a gig. When I came back, Tolu had moved out. Not just moved out, she sublet the place to two strangers. My key didn't work. My stuff was outside in nylon bags. I stood there, looking like a mumu, calling her phone. She picked and said, 'Chi-Chi, I can't do this anymore. We need to go our separate ways.'
Just like that. Two years of friendship, gone. I lost my deposit, my home, everything. I had to couch-surf at my aunty's place in Surulere for months. That period, I learned that money and friendship don't mix. No matter how close you are. If you must do business with a friend, put everything on paper. Trust me, love alone won't save you when rent is due.
