The Day I Saw Our Pastor Count Offering Money Alone in the Back Office

I was 34, a Sunday school teacher at a branch in Warri, and I had been in that church for nine years. This was 2021, when we were still doing two services because of COVID spacing. I was one of the people who counted offering after second service. That day the head usher, Brother Emma, told me to carry the two bags to the back office because Pastor wanted to pray over them first. When I opened the door, he was there alone. The doors were locked. He had the bags open on the table and he was separating the naira notes into three piles. One pile he put inside his laptop bag. I stood there holding the door handle, and he looked at me like I had caught him stealing garri, not church money. He smiled and said, "My sister, this one is for the building project. You know how these contractors are." There was no building project. We had been hearing about that project for four years. I said amen and carried the remaining bags to the counting room. My hands were shaking. I never told anybody. Not my husband, not the elders. Two months later they promoted me to assistant head usher. I declined and stopped coming for evening service. When people asked, I said I was busy with work. What I learned is this: the church is not the building. It is you and God. If you are waiting for a perfect pastor before you serve God, you will wait forever. But keep your eyes open. And never let anybody use the fear of God to empty your account.
