The ₦2.5 Million Lesson That Taught Me to Stop Trusting Handshakes
about 1 month ago
Three years ago I signed my biggest consulting contract. A fintech in Victoria Island, ₦2.5 million for six weeks of work. No deposit, just a handshake and their word. I was so sure of myself.
I delivered everything. Every line of code, every report, every late night. Then the client vanished. Phone off, office locked, my emails bouncing back. I had nothing to show for six weeks except a broken laptop charger and an empty account.
That month I couldn't pay my rent. My cousin's school fees, the ones I quietly handle every term, I had to delay. Nobody in my family knew why. I just said work was slow. The shame was worse than the money.
These days I collect 50% upfront. No exceptions. Not because I stopped trusting people, but because I finally understood that trust without structure is just hope. And hope doesn't pay rent in Lagos.
You ever learn a lesson the hard way that you wish you'd known five years earlier?
