Edebiri Temitope, 43, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly beating his neighbour Micheal Oje to death with a bamboo stick in Bluestone Treasure Estate, Mowe-Ofada. The reason will make you sit down. Micheal, a 38-year-old Guidance and Counselling graduate of Benue State University, had hugged Temitope's 3-year-old son.

According to Peter Adum, a younger cousin to the deceased, Micheal had just returned from work on August 26 when the child, who lived on the same street, ran towards him and hugged him. Adum said, "He hugged the boy and threw him playfully in the air and caught him, before going into his room to sleep." Temitope reportedly came outside, knocked on the door, accused Micheal of playing roughly with his child, then slapped him, picked up a bamboo stick and hit him about three times. Micheal fell and died on the spot.

The suspect went into hiding with his family, but the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed on Friday that Temitope had been arrested and transferred to the State CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation. A man is dead over a hug. Not a fight, not a debt, not land. A hug. What exactly was he protecting?
