N1,440 Per Litre And No Passengers: Who Is Lying About Subsidy?

T

Abu Sadiq, a commercial tricycle rider in Kano, told DAILY POST something that should make every Nigerian angry: "We buy fuel at N1,440, at other fuel stations at N1,470, and even after that, you don't always get passengers." So the man is buying fuel at a price that would make Lagos people cry, and still no passengers to carry. That is the real definition of suffering in this country.

And it's not just Kano. DAILY POST survey found Kano to Bauchi now costs N11,000, Kaduna to Kano is N7,000, Bauchi to Jalingo is N17,000. A tomato grinder called Maman Ramadan in Mariri said she no longer accepts tomatoes below N150 because of fuel. She even buys from black market sellers and still doesn't make profit. Professor M. I. Aminu from ABU Zaria said it clearly: there is no single percentage increase in fuel prices that will not badly affect low-income households. So why are we still debating whether to restore subsidy like it's a theoretical question?

Government says petrol prices can no longer be fixed. Opposition says Nigerians need relief. Meanwhile the man with the tricycle is buying fuel at N1,440 and waiting for passengers who are not coming. If you are earning below N200k in this Nigeria, how are you even surviving? Be honest, because I am tired of hearing people say we should just adjust.
