The ₦80k I Was Quietly Paying For Fuel Every Month Before I Checked My Bank App
about 1 month ago
I finally sat down with my bank statement last weekend. Not the summary o, the full thing. And I saw it. ₦80,000 gone on petrol in one month. I had to close the app and open it again. Same figure.
My car is not even a big car. I fill tank maybe twice a week, sometimes three if I have to drop my daughter at school and still make it to the office in Wuse before 8. That is just transport. Not food, not school fees, not NEPA token. Just fuel.
I was telling my colleague about it and she said she has stopped driving to work entirely. She now parks her car at a filling station near her house and takes keke. A woman with a car, taking keke, because the car has become a liability. I have not reached that point yet. But I am looking at the numbers and I understand why some people have.
The worst part is not even the money. It is that we have normalized it. We just adjust. Reduce this, cut that, stop buying this. And then next month the price moves again. How long can a person keep adjusting before there is nothing left to adjust?
