Fufu is objectively worse than pounded yam and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
about 1 month ago
Nobody wants to say it out loud but fufu is just pounded yam that gave up on itself. It's the same yam, same process, but somewhere along the line somebody said 'let's make it softer and more absorbent' and now we have a swallow that swallows you back. You finish one wrap and you're fighting for your life on the couch. That is not food, that is a sedative.
And before anybody comes for me, I ran the calculation. Pounded yam holds soup better, has actual texture, and doesn't turn to glue in your throat after two minutes. Fufu people will tell you it's 'easier to swallow' but easy to swallow is what we say about medicine, not a meal. My guy in Enugu will fight me on this and I respect him for it but he is wrong.
The real problem is nobody admits this because fufu is cheaper and we turned 'cheaper' into 'better' so we can sleep at night. Same way we do with everything else in this country. So which one is it for you, are you team pounded yam or you're still lying to yourself?
