We Said It Was Nothing Serious for Two Years. Then He Called Me Another Woman's Name.

I was 27, working as a front desk officer at a hotel off Zik Avenue in Enugu, and I had convinced myself I was too busy for a relationship. That was my story and I was sticking to it. Uche was a guest. Not even a guest like that, he was in town for a contract job and stayed with us for three weeks. We started talking at the reception, then at the staff canteen, then on WhatsApp past midnight. He never said "I want to date you" and I never asked. We just called it friendship with small extra. That is what we told ourselves. By the second month he was driving from Aba every weekend. By the fourth month I had a toothbrush for him in my bathroom. Still, we both kept saying "it's not that deep." The day I knew it was more was when his mother called his phone and he stepped outside to answer, and I felt something hot move in my chest. I had no right to feel that. We were not dating. But I felt it. One Saturday in December, after a long night, he was half asleep and called me "Ifeoma." I froze. I knew that name. I had seen it on his phone. He woke up and started apologising, saying it was nothing, an ex, a mistake. And the annoying thing is I still let him stay till Monday. The relationship did not end that day. It ended slowly, the way these things do. He stopped coming every weekend. I stopped asking why. We still talk sometimes, and I still answer. That is the part I am not proud of. What I learned? If you have to keep telling yourself it is nothing serious, it is already serious. The mouth can lie but that toothbrush in your bathroom is not lying. Know when to pack your things and your feelings together.
