N70k minimum wage na 50 litres of fuel. Let that sink in.

Atiku Abubakar came out on Sunday and told President Bola Tinubu to increase the minimum wage, backing the NLC demand. The man did not even sugarcoat it. He said at N1,400 a litre, the entire N70,000 monthly minimum wage buys just 50 litres of petrol. Fifty litres. That is one tank for some cars, and that is a worker's whole month of salary on paper.

And the line that hit me was in the statement from Phrank Shaibu: "The government pulled away the floor, offered workers a flimsy umbrella and now applauds itself while the rain beats down on them." I work in oil and gas, I see the numbers every day, and I can tell you the maths is not lying. Subsidy went, fuel, transport, food and rent swallowed the rest, and the people carrying the heaviest load are the ones earning the least.

But here is where I will argue with una. Even if Tinubu doubles that minimum wage tomorrow, what changes? We are just chasing a number while the naira keeps running. Be honest, if your salary doubled today, would you actually feel it, or would fuel and garri just adjust to meet you?
