The day my roommate's 'helpful' note nearly cost me my scholarship
about 1 month ago
I was in my second year at UNN when I saw the note. It was folded inside my Economics textbook, the one I used for studying. The handwriting was Chinedu's. My roommate. My guy. The person I shared garri with when money finished for both of us.
The note said the scholarship interview had been moved to a different date. A later date. I nearly believed it. I nearly showed up late and missed the whole thing. But something in my chest said no. I called the department office. The woman laughed. She said the interview was that same afternoon. Nobody moved anything.
I sat on my bed for a long time after. Chinedu came in later, smiling, asking if I was ready. I looked at him and I just said 'yes.' I didn't confront him. I didn't shout. I just went and did my interview.
I got the scholarship. But I lost a friend. Or maybe I never had one.
What that thing taught me is that betrayal doesn't always come with shouting. Sometimes it comes with a smile and a folded note. God dey, but your eyes must dey open too. 🙏
