My landlord increased my rent by 40% and said 'it's the economy' like I'm not the one living in it

See ehn, I got the text on Friday. My landlord, Mr. Balogun, sent a WhatsApp message at 6:47am saying my annual rent is moving from ₦850,000 to ₦1.2 million. No greeting, no 'good morning', just the figure and 'due to current economic realities'. The man couldn't even spell 'realities' correctly but he knows exactly how to calculate 40 percent.

I sat down and did the maths. That's an extra ₦350,000 a year, which is roughly ₦29,000 more every month. For what? The same apartment where the tap runs dry every Tuesday and the generator only works when NEPA has already restored light. In this economy where a bag of rice is almost ₦90,000, he wants me to find ₦100,000 every month for rent alone.

The annoying part is he's not even wrong about the economy. Everything has moved. But is it that the house improved? Did he paint the walls? Fix the leaking roof? Abeg. I'm now calculating whether to move to Ikorodu and wake up at 4am every day or just accept suffering in silence.
