I Kept Two Women in Two Cities for Four Years. Then My Wife Picked Up the Wrong Phone.

I was 38 in 2019, a contracts officer with a road construction firm in Calabar, married eleven years with two boys in a Catholic school off Marian Road. My wife, Nkoyo, sold fabric at Watt Market. We were not rich, but we were comfortable. Then a client's secretary, Ekaette, started following me to site meetings in Oban, and I told myself it was just work. It was not work. By December 2019 she was in a flat I rented for her in Akim, 65,000 naira every month, and I was telling Nkoyo I had night inspections in Odukpani. For four years I lived like a man with two nationalities. Two phones, one for home, one I kept in the car under the spare tyre. Two calendars in my head. I missed my second son's inter-house sports because Ekaette had a miscarriage scare and I could not explain to anybody where I was going. The near-miss was a Tuesday in 2023. My small phone rang while I was in the bathroom and my wife picked it because she thought it was my mother calling. The contact name was saved as "Engineer Bassey." Ekaette's voice came through saying she had bought the pregnancy test. Nkoyo did not shout. She just locked the door and looked at me like a stranger. I lost the flat, the money, the respect of my own children. Ekaette moved to Abuja and married someone else within a year. Nkoyo stayed, but she sleeps facing the wall now, and I cannot blame her. What I know today is this: a double life does not divide your problems, it multiplies them. Every lie you tell to protect the secret becomes a debt you will pay with interest. If you are hiding a phone, that phone is already your master.
