You Cannot Run Nigeria By Zoom, Onanuga

Bayo Onanuga came out on Sunday to tell us that President Bola Tinubu can rule Nigeria from anywhere, that in this digital age he does not need to be physically in Abuja. So we have a president who has been on vacation past the official three weeks, Nigerians asking where he is, and the answer is a $7 billion deep-sea port in Ogun Waterside and meetings in France.

I work in HR in Wuse. If my MD travels and stays past his leave without a word, the board will not accept "he is hale and hearty" as a status report. Onanuga also said, "Nigeria's President is hale and hearty. He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to." Fine. But entitlement is not the same as accountability.

Some of you will say he is working, that the port is real progress and we should not be petty. But a country where citizens are told the president can govern from anywhere is a country being prepared for a president who is never really here. Be honest, if it was your state governor missing for weeks, would you accept the same excuse?
