A Man Who Cannot Cook Is Not Ready For Marriage. I Said What I Said.

My wife traveled to Aba last weekend to see her mother. Two days. Just two days. I finished the small stew she left in the pot on Saturday morning, and by Sunday afternoon I was standing in my own kitchen looking at the gas cooker like it was a stranger.

I ended up buying suya and eating it with bread. That is a 39 year old man, a pastor, a father of one. Chineke. So when young men come to me for premarital counseling and they are busy talking about love and connection and all those things, I ask them one simple question. Can you cook? Not small rice. Real food. Because the thing about life is, love will not feed your children when your wife is in the hospital for one week. My own father could not boil water. My mother suffered for it quietly. I have seen things in counseling that I will not say here. But a man who cannot enter his own kitchen is not a husband yet. He is a customer.

I know some of you will say it is women's work. That is the same mentality that has our men dying early from hypertension and eating indomie every night like students. Nwanne, cooking is a life skill. Not a gender role. My daughter is 9 and she already knows how to make jollof. Her future husband should be thanking me, abi?

So let me ask una. If your son came home and said he wants to marry a woman who cannot cook at all, would you bless that marriage or would you sit him down?
