The okada man who charged me ₦2,500 to carry a bag of rice from Ikeja to Maryland

The bag of rice was ₦78,000. The okada man looked at me, looked at the bag, looked at the sky, and said ₦2,500. I asked him if the rice was going to sit on the bike or on his head. He said the rice would sit behind him and he would 'manage' the space.

I said no problem, carry it. This man put the bag on the bike, sat on top of the bag like he was riding a horse, and started the engine. The bag was taller than him. His legs were dangling. I stood there watching my ₦78,000 rice disappear down Awolowo Way with a man whose feet could not touch the ground.

Twenty minutes later he called me. 'Oga, the rice don fall for Maryland.' I asked him how. He said the bag shifted when he entered pothole. My brother, the bag was tied with rope. The rope cut. Rice was on the road. People were scooping rice into nylon bags. He was crying on the phone asking me to send transport money so he can come back. I have not recovered.
