My Brother Sold My Shop, Forged The Ledger, And Called It Business

M

I was in the village nursing my mother when Emeka did it. My junior brother. The one I carried on my back when he was small.

I put my whole savings into that provisions shop in Agege. Every kobo from tomatoes, from pepper, from onions. Four years of market money. I handed him the keys because Mama was sick and somebody had to hold the shop.

I came back after two months. Shelves empty. Ledger full of lies in his handwriting. He don sell everything, even the fridge. Then he told me, "Na business, sister. Business is risk."

Risk. Chai! I sat down on the floor of my own shop and cried like a baby. My mother's brother came to beg me. His wife came. I said nothing. I just locked the door.

It took me three years to stand again. Three years of starting from one basket of tomatoes. But God no dey sleep. Today I have three stalls. Emeka? We greet. That is all.

Forgiveness is not for him. It is so I can sleep at night. But trust? That one, e don go. 🙏
