Found the standing order by accident. I was looking for our mortgage details on the banking app, and there it was, £150 every month since 2020, going to an account I did not recognise. Six years. That is £10,800. At today's rate that is over ₦20 million.

I called my husband into the kitchen and showed him my phone. He did not even look surprised. He just said, 'My mother needs it, she is getting old.' I asked him why he never told me. He said he knew I would say no. So for six years, while I was counting every penny for our children's school shoes, his mother was getting £150 a month from our joint account and I was the only one who did not know.

The thing that pained me is not even the money. It is that he sat across from me every month, watched me budget, watched me say we cannot afford this or that, and said nothing. I have sent money to Ibadan every month since 2008. My own mother does not get a secret standing order. I am not angry that his mother needs help. I am angry that I was the last person in my own house to know.
