The Doctor Said One Word and I Walked Out of That Hospital Alone. Nobody in My Family Knows Till Today.
I was 38, working as a logistics supervisor in Benin City, and I had been coughing for close to two months. I kept buying Benylin and antibiotics from a chemist along Sapele Road because I was too busy to sit in a hospital queue. That was 2021. Work was choking me, my mother was sick in Auchi, and I was the only one sending money home.
When I finally did the test at a private lab in Ring Road, the woman at the desk would not even look at me. She just slid the envelope across. I opened it inside my Corolla and saw the word. Positive. I sat there for maybe one hour with the engine off.
I did not tell my wife. I did not tell my brother who is a nurse in UBTH. I told nobody. I started treatment secretly, hiding the bottle inside an old laptop bag. Every morning I would take it in the toilet before anybody woke up.
For two years my wife kept asking why I was distant, why I no longer touched her the way I used to. I told her work was stressing me. She cried one night and said maybe I had another woman. I let her believe that. Better she thinks I am a cheat than she starts asking questions I cannot answer.
Omo, the loneliness nearly finished me. Not the virus. The hiding.
Last year I finally told her. I had rehearsed it for months. She sat down, quiet, then asked me one question: since when? I said 2021. She asked why I waited. I had no answer that made sense.
We are still together. She tested negative. We thank God. But I lost two years of my marriage to silence, and that is the part I cannot get back.
If you are carrying something alone, hear me: the secret is heavier than the sickness. Tell somebody. Tell one person. Do not wait until the shame turns into years.
