Amaechi Says He Will Resign If Nigeria No Change In One Year
about 1 month ago
Rotimi Amaechi, the ADC presidential running mate, sat down for an interview on AIT on Wednesday and told Nigerians plainly that the country is in trouble. His exact words were: "We import over 46 percent of finished goods, Nigeria is in trouble." He did not stop there. He said the level of hunger has risen so high that when people invite him to private parties in the South, he sits and wonders where the money is coming from.
What caught my attention was his promise. Amaechi said if the ADC gets into office in 2027 and Nigeria does not change within one year, Nigerians should come to him and he will resign. He also said the federal government must deal with insecurity, the economy, and corruption before anything can progress. On subsidy, he asked a direct question: "Tinubu removed subsidy, what are the benefits of subsidy when the money is in private pockets?" That is a fair question, whether you like the man or not.
I have watched Nigerian politics since the Second Republic and I have heard many promises. The resignation pledge is new, I will give him that. But one year is a short window for a country with this many wounds. Still, a man who puts his own seat on the line is at least saying something different from the usual. Be honest with me, if any politician tells you today that he will resign if he fails in one year, do you believe him or do you just laugh?
