The 4am grain sacks that taught me who really works in this country

A

My father was a grain merchant for 35 years. Every morning he left the house before Fajr, before even the first call to prayer finished. I used to think it was just business. Then one morning I followed him.

The market was already alive at that hour. Women carrying sacks twice their size on their heads. Old men counting cowries under torchlight. Nobody was complaining. Nobody was filming. They just worked. My father walked through all of them, greeting every single person by name, in their own language. He didn't rush. He didn't look down on anybody. That was his real business, not the grain.

Now I run a company that connects 3,000 farmers to buyers. People ask me how I built it. I tell them I learned it in that market at 4am, watching my father treat a woman selling five cups of millet the same way he treated the man buying fifty bags. The network is the business. The respect is the network.

How many of us today can say we know the name of the person who actually feeds us?
