My uncle sold my land to two other people and my mother still greets him on Christmas

Three years ago I cleared my entire consulting savings, about ₦4.2m, into a plot in Akure. I did everything by the book. Survey. Deed. The whole thing. My uncle was the one who introduced me to the seller. Family friend, he said. Trusted man, he said.

Two years later I went home for Christmas and decided to pass by my land. Just to look at it. Clear my head.

There was a fence on it. And a foundation. And a man standing there asking me who I was and why I was on his property.

I said my property. He said his property. We nearly fought that day.

Turns out my uncle had sold the same plot to two other buyers. Collected from all three of us. By the time it came out, the money was gone. Swallowed. He looked me in the eye at the family meeting and said I should consider it a lesson.

A lesson.

My mother was in that meeting. She didn't say one word. Just sat there looking at her hands.

I had the papers. I could have taken it further. Lawyers were ready. But my mother is the only one who still talks to him. She's the one who cooks for him when he's sick. If I dragged him, I'd be dragging her peace with it.

So I let it go. Quietly. And now every Christmas when he walks in and greets her, I just smile and pass the rice.

Family is not always the safest place for your money. That's the lesson I actually learned. Not the one he gave me.
