My Boss Said I Would Never Get a Job in Ilorin Again If I Refused Him.

I was 27, working as an admin officer at a small oil servicing company in Ilorin. The pay was 60,000 naira and I had been job hunting for two years before that. My boss was a 52 year old man who everybody called Alhaji. He had a way of standing too close when he spoke to me. The first time he touched my waist, I told myself it was an accident. The second time, he held my hand and said he liked the way I dressed. I laughed it off. Then one evening he called me into his office, closed the door and told me plainly that if I wanted to keep my job, I would have to be 'nice' to him. He said he had helped many girls in his time and they all ended up fine. He also said he could make one phone call and I would never work in Ilorin again. I stood there calculating. My mother was sick and I was the one paying her bills. I had a younger brother in 200 level. I knew if I lost that job, I would be back to selling recharge cards. So I did not shout. I did not report. I just told him I would think about it and walked out. For the next eight months, I endured. I would wear loose clothes to work. I would make sure my desk was far from his office. He would send me on errands and brush against me. I stopped sleeping well. I started dreading Mondays. My work suffered but I did not care. I just wanted to survive. One day, a new girl joined as a receptionist. She was 23, fresh from school. I saw how he started looking at her. I knew that look. Something in me just broke. I could not let another person go through what I was going through. So I went to the HR manager, a woman, and told her everything. She listened, nodded, and told me she would handle it. Two weeks later, I was transferred to a branch in Ibadan. No investigation. No apology. Just a transfer. The new girl resigned on her own a month later. Alhaji is still there till today. I heard he even got promoted. I am not going to lie and say I am at peace. I am not. But I learned something. The system will not always protect you. Sometimes the best you can do is protect yourself and warn the next person. If you are in that position, document everything. Send yourself emails. Keep a diary. And if you can, do not wait until you are broken before you speak. Your job is not worth your soul.
