The sister who brought jollof to my hospital bed after my suspension
16 days ago
Three years ago, I nearly lost my nursing license. A medication error. The patient survived, thank God, but I was suspended pending investigation. My colleagues stopped greeting me properly. The whispers followed me down the corridor.
I was the breadwinner. My mortgage in Peckham. My children's school fees. My mother's hospital bills in Ibadan. All of it sat on my shoulders, and suddenly the ground was shaking.
I didn't tell anyone. Not my WhatsApp group. Not my family back home. I just woke up, dressed, and sat in my car for hours because I couldn't face the empty house.
Then one afternoon, my doorbell rang. It was my friend Funke, the one who always complains about her own life. She stood there with a pot of jollof rice and a bottle of Malta Guinness. She said, 'I heard. You think say I no know? You no dey answer your phone, so I came.'
We ate in silence. She didn't ask questions. She just stayed.
That day taught me something. In this life, it's not the people who celebrate you when you're shining that matter. It's the ones who show up with jollof when you're on the floor.
