Pastor Abel Damina says no first fruit money. I remember my father's yam

I was reading the Tribune this morning, and I saw where Pastor Abel Damina said there is nothing like first fruit money. He said it plainly. My mind went straight to my father's farm in the village, many years ago. Every harvest, he would carry the first yam to the church, and he would tell us it was for God. He never asked questions. He just did it.

Now, I am not a theologian. I am just a retired civil servant who reads his Bible and minds his business. But I have observed over the years that when we give, our heart must be in it. If a man gives because he is afraid, that is not worship. That is something else. My father gave because he believed. That is the difference.

My daughter called me this afternoon, laughing. She said, Daddy, so should we stop giving first fruit? I told her, my daughter, give what you understand. Do not give what you do not understand. God is not a taskmaster. He sees your heart. The Yoruba say, bi oba ti ri ni mo ti n ri. What the king sees is what I see. So, what do you see when you give? Is it fear or is it love?
