Two years ago, my father had emergency surgery at a hospital in Ikeja. Same night, the US startup I worked for had a production server crash. I was the only engineer on overnight shift. My mother was calling me nonstop. I muted her. I fixed the server. By the time I got to the hospital, my father was already in recovery. My mother didn't speak to me for a week. She said, "Your job is more important than your father's life." I tried to explain that if I lost that job, I couldn't pay for the next surgery. She didn't want to hear it. The data says I made the logical choice. But logic doesn't sit well at family gatherings. My father is fine now. My mother still brings it up sometimes. And I still don't know if I made the right call.
