BREAKING: The Court of Appeal in Finland has reduced Simon Ekpa's six-year prison sentence to four years. The three justices, Aki Rasilainen, Antti Santaranta, and Assistant Judge Johanna Puukka, upheld the District Court's finding that Ekpa was guilty of terrorism-related crimes but agreed the original sentence was too harsh. This was last Thursday, 15 October 2026.

The PΓ€ijΓ€t-HΓ€me District Court had sentenced Ekpa on 1 September 2025 for participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly inciting people to commit crimes for terrorism purposes. The court said he used his huge social media following to cause tension in Nigeria's south-eastern region between August 2021 and November 2024. His lawyers argued that the situation in the east resembles a civil war but does not meet the legal definition of terrorism, and that international humanitarian law should apply instead. The prosecutors wanted the sentence increased, saying six years was too small.

With this judgment, Ekpa will regain his freedom by September 2029 instead of 2031. His supporters attended the hearing wearing t-shirts with his picture and the words #FreeSimonEkpa. The decision is not final, so prosecutors can still appeal to the Supreme Court. For a man who once represented Nigeria in athletics, winning silver at the 2003 Africa U20 Championships, this is quite a fall. What do you make of this reduction?
