I Drank Myself Into a Ditch in Aba. The Day I Woke Up There Was the Day I Stopped.

I was 34, a spare parts dealer at Alaoji, and by 2019 I was drinking two bottles of Chelsea dry gin every day before noon. It started small, just to cool my head after a customer frustrated me. Then it became the reason I woke up. My wife would hide the bottles. I would find them. She would cry. I would promise. Then I would go and buy more with money meant for our son's school fees. That was the low point, the day I collected 15,000 naira from her for textbooks and came back with a bag from the wine shop and no books. One evening I woke up in a gutter near Tonimas junction, my phone gone, my shoes gone, and a woman selling akara asking me if I was okay. I looked at my own reflection in the dirty water and did not recognise the man looking back. I was 34 but I looked 50. I did not go to rehab. I could not afford it. I went to my pastor, a small branch of Deeper Life, and told him everything. He did not judge me. He just said, "Come every morning at 5am and pray with me for 90 days." I did. The first two weeks were hell. I shook, I sweated, I could not sleep. But I stayed. That was four years ago. I still sell spare parts. My son is in JSS3 now. I am not saying prayer is the only way, but for me, it was the hand that pulled me out. If you are in that hole, find your own 5am. Find one person who will not shame you. And stay.
