The day I found my late husband's hidden calabash under our bed
13 days ago
I was sweeping under the bed last year, the one place I never touch because my late husband kept his shoes there. I see one small calabash wrapped in red cloth. My hand begin shake. I no open am. I call my neighbour Mama Bisi, she say make I no touch am, say na juju.
I swear, my heart just stop. Twenty five years we marry. Twenty five years. And I never see this thing. I start to think, maybe na for protection, maybe na for something else. I no sleep that night.
Next morning I carry am go my pastor. He pray, he open am. Inside na just dry leaves and one old coin. My husband's mother gave it to him when we marry, for blessing. He hid am because he know I no like that kind thing.
Chai. I cry. Not because of juju, but because the man carry secret go grave. I still love am. But that day I learn say, no matter how you know person, there is always one small corner you never see. 🙏
