Atiku says Tinubu is the Egypt Nigerians want to escape, and he is not wrong

Atiku Abubakar came out swinging yesterday. The former vice president and ADC presidential candidate said President Bola Tinubu is the Egypt Nigerians are desperate to escape, not the Moses leading them out. Atiku's media aide Phrank Shaibu released the statement on Tuesday, and the quote is brutal: "Bola, you are the Egypt Nigerians are desperate to escape. You celebrate the day you made fuel more expensive, then lecture families struggling to pay for food and transport about why they must never go back."

Let us be honest about the policy reality here. Tinubu removed the subsidy in May 2023 with that famous "Fuel subsidy is gone" declaration. Petrol prices tripled overnight. Transport fares in Abuja doubled. A bag of rice that was 40,000 naira is now well over 100,000 naira. The government keeps saying the removal will attract investment and stabilise the economy, but the man in Karu buying fuel at 1,200 naira per litre does not care about macroeconomics. He cares that his salary has not moved.

Atiku has now vowed to restore the subsidy if elected on January 16, 2027. Peter Obi of the NDC and Adewole Adebayo of the SDP are also in the race. But here is my question: is Atiku genuinely offering a solution, or is he just recycling the same subsidy model that everyone agreed was corrupt and unsustainable? Because restoring subsidy without fixing the refineries and the NNPC transparency problem is just another way to burn money. So tell me, who is actually serious about this thing?
