My roommate finished the last garri on Tuesday night. I came back from night class hungry, opened the cupboard, and saw the empty nylon staring at me. I just stood there. 2,500 naira is my daily budget, so I had already spent my food money for that day. The garri was supposed to be my backup for the next morning.

I asked him why he didn't leave small. He said he thought I had already eaten. We didn't talk for two days. That's how hostel life is. One minute you're sharing bread, the next minute you're calculating who owes who. I even started hiding my milk in my locker.
