My mother passed in 2019. We cleared her house in Ibadan last year, and I found this old Bible she carried everywhere. Pages worn thin. I was about to pack it when a folded paper fell out. Her handwriting. The jollof recipe she never gave anyone, not even me. She used to say "Bose, you will learn it when you are ready." I sat on her bed and cried. I had been trying to cook her jollof for years, and it never tasted right. The secret was in the paper: she used to fry the tomato paste with the onions until it turned dark, almost burning. That was it. I made it that Sunday for my children. My son said "Mum, this tastes like Grandma's." I just stood there. God is faithful. Sometimes what we are looking for is right under our nose, waiting for us to be ready.
