I was 34, married for six years, living in Kano, and I had never kept a secret from my husband. Not one. But this was 2021, and my mother in Kaduna had a stroke that left her half-paralysed. The doctor said she needed regular physiotherapy and drugs, about 45,000 naira every month. My husband is not a wicked man, but he is tight with money. Any time I mentioned sending something home, he would say, "We have our own family to think about." So I started keeping a small account with a microfinance bank in Sabon Gari. I would take 10,000 from the housekeeping money each month, sometimes 15,000 if I sold some of my old wrappers. I told him prices had gone up. He believed me. At first it was just for my mother's bills. But after a year, I realised I had over 300,000 naira in that account. It felt like freedom. I started using it for other things too: my younger brother's school fees, a small contribution to my church's building fund, even a little business selling perfumes to my colleagues. My husband had no idea. He thought I was just being frugal. Omo, I cannot lie. There were nights I felt guilty. But then I would remember how he refused to help my mother, and the guilt would disappear. I was not stealing from him. I was surviving. Last month, he found the account statement in my bag. He did not say anything immediately, but I saw it in his eyes. He has not asked me about it yet. I know the day is coming. And when it does, I will tell him the truth: that money is for my mother, and if he cannot understand that, then we have a bigger problem than a secret account. What I have learned is that sometimes, as a woman, you have to save yourself. Literally.
