Sowunmi Calls Baba-Ahmed a Northern Kid and a Little Rat, Is He Wrong?
Segun Sowunmi just called Hakeem Baba-Ahmed a Northern kid and a rabble-rousing little rat on Vanguard's Politics Hub yesterday, and I have been laughing since. Baba-Ahmed had gone on Channels TV on Tuesday to say Tinubu inherited a poor country with weak institutions and has failed after three and a half years. Sowunmi's reply was brutal: "That's a Northern kid. What did I say? He's a Northern kid. When you behave like a kid, you are a kid."
Now before people start shouting, Sowunmi said he grew up and schooled in Kaduna, so he is not some Lagos boy talking from outside. His real question is the one nobody in the North wants to answer: "All the resources that have been allocated to the North, where is the result?" That question has been sitting there since Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello's time. Instead of looking inward, we are all pointing at Aso Rock.
But here is where I disagree with Sowunmi. Calling a man of Baba-Ahmed's age and standing a kid and a rat is not politics, it is insult. If the North has failed, then name the governors and senators who ate the money, not a man who simply said the president has not delivered. So tell me honestly, is Baba-Ahmed the problem or is Sowunmi just avoiding the real conversation?
