My mum still thinks I earn Naira. I've been lying to her for two years
12 days ago
She called me last week to ask if I could help with my younger brother's school fees. I said yes before she finished the sentence. Then she said something that made me sit down on my balcony floor... 'Jide, I know things are hard for you in Lagos, don't worry yourself too much.'
Hard. She thinks I'm struggling. Meanwhile I'm sending her 20% of a USD salary every month and she's praying for me to find a better job. I let her believe it because the one time I tried to explain the exchange rate, she started crying about how she doesn't want me to suffer alone.
So now I just listen. She tells me about the price of garri, I nod on the phone, and I transfer the money. The numbers say I'm doing well. But the woman who carried me for nine months thinks I'm one bad month away from moving back to Surulere. How do you even begin to correct that without making her feel like she failed?
